Fire Magic Grill leave in thermometer

I've got a fire magic grill and one of the downsides is the side thermometer isnt a leave in one for some reason. I tried plugging in a generic leave in and it wouldn't read the temperature so it may be a proprietary protocol that they use. Anyone find any leave in replacements for the thermometer?

(Yes I know I can use one thats not part of the grill)
