Aaron Franklin Brand Smokers

Lyfe Tyme, Lone Star Grillz, Gator pits and many others make radiused ash rakes for $25-50. I use one from Lyfe Tyme that came with the pit, then I follow up w/ a small handbroom to get the finer ashes out.

Edit, just realized that wouldn't work on this pit...

Vacuum or shovel. It's the only way.

My smoker is almost identical to Aaron’s smokers. What I use for the ash is a round tip shovel. Just follow the curve of the firebox and with 2-3 scoops you get most of it out.

I've only met him once but he struck me as straight shooting welder who knows how to smoke a brisket. If there is a bbq anti-rock star, its him. I have hunch he fully understands that most of the people that stand in line at his joint in Austin are not the people who will make or break his reputation as a Texas pit builder. If there were an over/under on the quality of his pits, I'd take the over.
