Full Fledged Farker
I was talking to my friend the other day about an upcoming camping trip our families will be taking, and I was lamenting about what BBQ gear I was taking, whether I would take the Kettle or the vertical for outdoor cooking. So he says to me "why bother, there is a gas grill down at the cabin"....He also asked me why I bought "outdated" charcoal grills when gas is much easier...
He has had my smoked chicken, and pulled pork, but he doesn't get it. My thought on using coal vs gas is: that it is not only the flavor profile, but the experience. For years, I hated the thought of using charcoal, and I only used it once or twice a year, when we did MD Pit beef. I always wanted a gas pit to do that too.
Between this site, and a friend who became a KCBS judge and part time caterer of delicious pork done on charcoal, I became a convert. I still have a gasser, but it was relegated to burgers, or when time is a critical factor, like getting off work late.
Anyone else have similar situations happen?
BTW, I am taking all my BBQ toys with me AND either hiding the propane cylinder, or hooking up my fish fryer to it, when we get there.
