15 no votes but no explanations as to why not. I am not judging one way or the other but I would like to know why people vote no. I voted yes because I am open to trying just about anything. If you vote no, is it because you have a personal attachment to horses? I am just curious.

I'd try it, but i am a bit concerned that USDA will have to do more inspections with less funds... that means inspection of beef and other meats will be decreased

I'm hearing a few people grumble about how this law is going to hurt the current meat markets in the US. IMO the legislation is only to fix the last stupid ass law that disallowed the slaughtering of horses. Slaughtering horses have been around forever, this is just like the protection of wolves. We all want to protect those 'helpless' animals from extinction, until they start carrying off small children because their population has exploded. I digress. My point is, I have owned work horses and a lot of cattle in my life, and recently there are ZERO ways to get rid of an old useless horse - because it is ILLEGAL to slaughter a horse. Or what if I can barely afford to feed the horse, because feed shot up 300% and I don't want to starve the poor thing. Many of my neighbors have tried to figure out a humane way to get rid of a horse as well, and there was never a way to do it legally, because of this 'feel good' law. So the results were, people driving a horse trailer out into the boonies and letting the go freely, creating problems of stray horses. This law is just to alleviate the problem of horse disposal. We're not going to start seeing the McHorse at the local McD's. IMO *sound of me tripping and falling off my soapbox...*

I voted "NO" and here's why:

I personally feel that we, as human beings, need to separate our classifications of "PETS" and "FOOD". For instance, lets say I've got a 5 acre pasture in the backyard with a couple of horses that my wife and kids ADORE. Then, my next door neighbor says to me "You think we could get one of those on my Lang 84?"

Joking or not, it just doesn't mix well in a society that cares for these animals as pets.

Yes, I know people have pet pigs.........and that's wrong too.

I'm just saying we need to separate the animals we "hug and love on" from those that we slice their throats and feed our families with.

As far as I know they closed the last 2 horse slaughterhouses in Texas a couple of years ago.. they were owned by Belgian companies and they exported the meat to Europe..

lot of political pressure and "feelgood" type hype that made them close down and prohibit horse slaughter in a lot of states .. ( things like "un-human" to slaughter horses were mentioned for what ever reasons..)

so now they export those horses to Mexico where you won't want to know about some slaughter practices they use in some of those places...

they big question however is what are you going to do with all these horses until they die ?
who's going to feed them and what will you do with them when they die?

just to be sure you know- I'm a Dutchman and we grew up with having horse butchers in most of our towns - and I remember that a nice piece of horse meat was pretty tasty!

I would eat horse, I have no issues with the whole pet vs working animal thing. They are eaten in the rest of the world along with several other animals that we dont eat so I would try it and if I liked it would eat it.

I have no problem with it...
There are people who can't understand how I can raise pigs, chickens and beef, then butcher them. They are treated like kings and queens while here. I pamper my animals and appreciate what they provide for me.
