I have a chance to get a fire basket made from 13 gauge steel. Is that considered strong enough for such use?

Yes. Flat expanded steel is what most use. It is heavy.

I would build my next basket lower, like 8" to save weight.

I have never used more than 3 layers of Kingsford and that will outlast a 5 hour cook.

Yes, this is (I'm told) 13 gauge expanded steel. Wasn't sure if that was too flimsy to stand up to the rigors or repeated fires even at lowish temps.

Worse case scenario- you will have to replace it every few years.

13 ga. is decent (.0937" thk.) should be fine for a long time.

Actually, 13 Gauge is .0897" thick. :p.0.0897897 .0897

I made mine from 9 guage. Bending it into a circle was not fun.

I used a 5 pound hammer and wore heavy leather gloves to fight it into a loop.

The 9 guage is overkill. I made the base from a Weber charcoal grate, the brunt of the heat and wear are on the bottom, my fire never even touches the sides of the basket.

I am collecting parts for a new UDS build, 13 guage is what I want next time.

My baskets are always made from 13 gauge and my oldest is 3 years old and still as good as new and I use my drum plenty.
