Dang, I should have remembered that. Did the hot side of the biscuit test relate to the location of the larger bung hole by any chance? Or was one bung hole more open than the other?

From page-one:
It's a little warmer on the west side. (Photo taken facing south) Ironically, the air inlets below the grate are at 12 & 6 o'clock. Heat should be even from east to west. I can only assume that the Earth's rotation is somehow affecting the combustion airflow. No doubt the heat distribution would be reversed in the southern hemisphere.

Come on guys, this is drum cooking. Don't overthink it, and certainly don't think you're the first to come up with your "mods". Build it by the book, use it, learn it, realize the fancy stuff can't make it better. 'nuff said.
