Hey folks, proud new WSCGC owner here. Still haven't had the chance to fire the thing up because I'm still in the process of moving and the weather has been super depressing the past week and a half, but I'm getting there!!

I had a question about how you all use the lower grate.

Of course you can put the heat deflector over the lower grate for smoking, and you can use the upper grate for direct or two-zone cooking, but I was wondering if any of you put your charcoal on the lower grate and don't use the deflector? Basically a direct cooking setup with more distance between the food and the coals.

Seems like it'd be a good way to grill some chicken parts and such, but was wondering if any of y'all had tried it and had experiences to share.

Works good for bone in chicken and i like it as well for burgers. Just try to keep a small section of the lower without charcoal so you have an area of indirect on the cooking grate.
