I'm looking' for some advice!

I am building a vertical smoker out of some unusual parts, but the firebox has me worried a little. the basic bits are:
1/4 steel for the outer walls, 1X1 angle for shelf supports, the side hinged (front) door will be in the neighborhood of 12"X18". I am including a ash drawer for easy cleanup, but I was wondering if the airflow principles of an UDS would work on a 24"X24" square box? a couple of pipe inlets and one ball valve for fine tuning? I despise the sliding slat inlets I usually see... suggestions? Thanks!
