Is rub on a steak a waste of time?

of course it's not a waste of time... for my steaks. if you like it better without, go for it.
 
The reason it’s burning is likely due to the sugar in whatever rub you’re using. About the only seasoning I’ll put on a steak besides salt and pepper is Oakridge BBQ Carne Crosta…which is excellent.

I second the Carne Crosta. I’ve been out of it for awhile but My order just came in and I can’t wait to use it.
