Saw this on another food site. Interesting

Made onion rings today. Substituted red Chile powder for the paprika and they were delicious.

One white onion sliced into rings
2 cups flour divided
2t salt
2t red Chile powder
1t garlic powder
1/2 t black pepper
1 12 oz. Can ginger ale

Combine 1 1/2 cups of flour with spices
Add ginger ale
Whisk until smooth
Let stand 10 minutes

Heat oil to 375

Toss onions in the other 1/2 cup of flour
Coat in batter

Fry approximately 3 minutes flipping once to evenly brown both sides. (Make sure not to put too many in at once to prevent them from sticking together)

Transfer to plate lined with paper towels to drain excess grease and salt immediately.

Enjoy.

There was a photo and they looked killer. Almost like onion ring donuts. I’m not taking another persons photo but that alone is tempting enough to try this batter

That would be my guess along with a hint of sweet. I’ve not made rings in a long long time. Just don’t fry things very often. More of a sautés cook. But this hit me when I read it.
