Refurbishing an old smoker

Hey everyone I'm glad to be in this group. I was just gifted a used Klose smoker. It hasnt been fired up in 5 years. It's in great shape, just has some surface rust inside the smaller barrel, smoker tower and firebox. I'm thinking to use a wire wheel, give it a good cleaning then season it. I'm just looking for some tips, I've only used smaller box store smokers in the past and I want to be sure i do right by this beautiful new smoker. Thanks.

before you prime and paint

heat the metal to 200+ that drives the water out
carfully when it cools apply primer and paint

I would get it sandblasted inside and out that way if there is any underlying issues they can be exposed. The paint will adhere much much better.... no primer needed I’d use rustoleum
1200 degree paint.... I’ve painted many many cookers it’s the best paint I’ve found for an offset cooker..... good luck!!!!!!

I recommend the Rustoleum also but if the surface rust is on the inside, then wire wheel, or nothing, then cook. A little rust on the inside is no big deal.
