What's the purpose of the square box on the round firebox door ?

Thanks. It provides a flat surface to either set a pot of beans/whatever or to pre-heat logs. I wanted the benefit of a pipe firebox (under outdoor uncovered conditions it last longer than a square box because water wont sit on the top and they are less prone to burn-out) but tha required the mod to give me a flat furface.
