I use the side burner on the grill, fast and easy, once it's dumped I set it on a paver, never a problem of spalling the concrete with the coals gone.
 
Either cooking grate or cinderblock. Have done it on the driveway before too with a dollar store sheet pan as to not to leave marks but, with the above comments on explosions I don't think I will continue that method
