Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays All...

On Monday I plan on leaving Queens, NY driving southbound towards the Raleigh Durham area. No plans in particular, just the wind blowing through what's left of my hair. Going to sample some q to and from my destination. Looks like my route takes me through Baltimore, Philly, D.C., and Richmond on the way. Does anyone have any good Q/ comfort food recommendations? Looking for the real deal, hoping to find some non-tourist trap hidden gems.

Usually stop at Chapp's Pit Beef in Baltimore, but that's about as far as I've got in my planning. Obviously I'm in the process of doing some yelp legwork, but any firsthand Q tips are appreciated. Happy Holidays Again.

A few recommendations for you on your way through.

1- Tuffy has 4 spots in the Richmond area

2- A new place that popped up, I have heard really good things from some of my friends who love BBQ. SmokeHouse Live in Leesburg
http://smokehouse-live.com/

3- In Raleigh The Pit is really good, worth a stop!

***Edit**
Forgot one more, its a road side stop, but he does brisket really well!

4- Smoking Billys BBQ

Enjoy the trip and report back with where you went to!

Thanks for the Intel. will do. Very curious about Tuffy, his stuff always looked so good on t.v...

Allen & Sons just north of Chapel Hill NC; real deal NC pork BBQ :thumb:

Have you hit the good spots in NYC while you've been there? You've gotta hit Mighty Quinn's in lower Manhattan and Delaneys in Brooklyn at very least. Dinosaur Harlem might be worthwhile as well if you have time, but if you could hit just one, go to Mighty Quinn's.

Check out this website that tracks places featured in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives; http://www.tvfoodmaps.com/show/Diners-Drive-Ins-Dives so many mouthwatering comfort foods places mentioned, viewable by area to make it easy to browse. There's a few similar sites fur this and other shows where the host travels around eating too ...

hahahhaha that is 1 over the top show. I have been to a couple of D&D places in my life..usually good stuff... thanks for the tip

Its funny you should mention I was tempted to start a second thread about best in NYC. My favorite NYC places:

Hometown BBQ Redhook Brooklyn - Have been going here loyally, have a real good brisket and beef short rib, 1 of the few places in New York (due to environmental, building codes) that smokes legit...believe they use exclusively Langs. As well the owner and the people there are nice.

I think hometown and hill country (below) beats Mighty Quinn any day IMHO

Hill Country - Probably up there as most consistent moist brisket I've had. Only thing is they are a super low temp place (cook round 200) so some of the food has like a gelatin feel to it; could use some more bark, but the meat melts in your mouth...

Mighty Quinn - I wanted to like this places. It's legit above average bbq; but it was over-salted and over-hyped when we have other NYC spots.

Delaney's - Went there for the first time 2 weeks ago, good brisket, very good brisket, real texas pure salt & pepper. Best smoked sausage I ever had. Kind of wine bar/ sit down set up found to be a little pretentious, but servers and people there were very down to earth and accommodating.

Dinosaur - Went there several years ago, when I was new to my bbq addiction. From my memories it was sort of saucy and touristy trapish..

P.S. I believe I went to Wilson's near Fairfield CT 2x...first time very good ribs & sides..next time got very bland tasting burnt ends and ribs.. not sure of the consistency... Also in Hartford Bear's was really good, had a solid brisket and best beef ribs I've tasted anywhere..good people there too..

Unfortunately, you're not going South enough....

Hahaha. Yeah up on my list is a legit south carolina bbq tour. It's on the bbq bucket list. I've done Atlanta, K.C., and going for Texas (Austin/ Hill Country) in February. Unfortunately, I'm driving down to spend a lot of time in Richmond, and probably a night in Durham...Will at some point fly down for 4-5 days to due the region legit..

In Raleigh I'd HIGHLY recommend "Clyde Coopers" downtown. True Eastern NC style BBQ. "The Pit" is rather pretentious and they think a lot of their food ($$$), it was good when Ed Mitchell opened it, but since he's been gone I've not heard much good about it. "The Pit" in Durham is much better in my opinion than the one in Raleigh.
Definitely hit "Allen & Sons" NORTH of Chapel Hill on Hwy 86. Usually pretty good stuff.

Check out the website for the Q-joints you plan to hit, as their hours and other details are necessary (Cooper's is cash only, Allen's closes when they run out of pork, etc).

The best stop on the way down is Q BBQ in Richmond. There is one just off the highway. As mentioned before, it is Tuffy's place and there is one right off the highway.

If you're hungry before, there is Dixie Bones in Woodbridge.

If you want to take a scenic route through Charlottesville, I'd STRONGLY recommend BBQ Exchange in Gordonsville VA. They have a slightly different take on BBQ and are excellent.

I never made it to Clyde's as they were always closed when I was by, same with Allen and Sons.

In the triangle, I thoroughly enjoy the Original Q Shack in Durham, especially on Wednesday evenings for their blue grass music (note that this is Texas-style Q and not Carolina Q)

Also for a good time, I enjoy The Blue Note in Durham. I haven't been to their new location, but it is a short walk from The Pit. Next time I'm down that way, I'm heading for The Pit for dinner and then walking to the Blue Note for whatever they've got playing.

I strongly recommend their bread pudding for dessert.

Thanks Tom for the tips. The less pretentious the better. I like when they their food do the talking..

If you don't mind, it would be great if you could post a follow-up on your trip and where you stopped and your experiences at each.

GOOD LUCK and have a SAFE TRIP!!!

...Happy New Year All..and here is the update

Left Queens Monday 12/28. On the way there made some stops.

Day 1

Chapps Pit Beef- Batimore: Worth the hype, a tripple D favorite. Went in for the pit beef sandwich and some mac and cheese. Beef was tender with a nice bite, nice flavor, and a little bit of crispy to it. I love the horsey sauce. Mac and cheese was very plain, very average. My 3rd time there in past couple of years, not traditional Q, but a nice place on outskirts of Balt. If you passing through.

Freddy's Smokehouse - Washington D.C., when the I95 traffic would not cooperate, I decided D.C. was a good stopping point, because nothing would be open in Richmond by time I got there. I should have asked a bretheren for a recommendation;instead just pulled off what was closest on the GPS. I got a sample plate which I found to be mediocre. The chicken, pulled pork, and ribs were dry. They had a thin sliced brisket that was very tough. The sides coleslaw, mac & cheese were very bland. It tasted like the food was probably made well with a lot of love, but over time must have dried out in a warmer or steam table. Not recommended.

Day 2

Que - Glen Allen VA - Having seen Tuffy on T.V., I wanted to try this. It very much had a corporate panera bread decor, with elevator muzak in the background. However, the food holds its own. Ribs were real juicy with good bite and bark. Brisket was not my bag, because it was chopped style. Imo made well, but seriously why chop your brisket into little pieces, why?? Mac and cheese, was creamy rich, above average. Collard greens stole the show, just a real rich flavor, not greasy but well flavored. Give it a try.

Ron's Ribs, Wings & Other things - Henrico VA: A last minute impulse, was hungry for a late lunch. When I got out immediately greeted by welcome site of fenced in commercial sized smokers blowing billows of smoke. Staff is really friendly, feels like a neighborhood gathering place. Seating is limited but there are a couple of small counter seats. Ribs were real smoky with a good crucnchy bark. Chicken wings had a hint of smoke, nice crispy skin. Pulled pork was moist and flavorful. Baked beans were rich with full flavor. Definitely a solid above average spot, not a top 5 in my all time book, but I think I would frequent this place as a local.

Day 3

The Pit - Raleigh N.C.
- Clyde Copper's was closed for the holidays. This is more per se of a restaurant then a straight que joint. Overall not bad, brisket was tender, topped with a little bbq sauce, not oustanding flavor but fairly good. Pulled pork was tasty but a little on the dry side. Made it moist with some vinegar sauce. Didn't have traditional sides although their fried mac and cheese was a tasty shock to my arteries. http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin1.gif

Overall an ok trip; next up is Austin and the hill country, third week of February. I got my que addiction started by a K.C. bbq tour bout 5 years ago when I tasted my first burnt ends at LC's. I'm hoping a solid Texas tour will reignite my flame.

Guess I should have warned you about the brisket at Q BBQ. It caught me by surprise the first time, but I've really grown to like it.

Also, you've added one more place not to get BBQ in the DC area. The place is a desert.
