I had a judge walk up to my tent and stick his finger in my injection as I was prepping butts and taste it.

Wow! It would've been hard not to punch him in the throat.

I didn't know he was a judge at the time and I thought he was with some good friends of ours (turns out he wasn't). I didn't want to punch their friend. My teammate was surprised with my self restraint.

We were in the middle of cutting a brisket and boxing the meat with about 2 min to turn-in. Guy walks right up to me and starts asking all sorts of questions. Doesn't wait for an answer just starts asking questions. I POLITELY told him I was busy and could not talk thinking he was one of the many people that attended the DC BBQ Battle this past weekend. He then says, "okay, yeah, I just turn our brisket in". Are you kidding me? wondering if anybody else has had another team member come up to you and start talking BBQ as you are getting a box together during the last minutes?

Yep...last weekend. I was prepping my pork turn in when another team member walked in. I looked up and said "not a good time to visit...I'm in the middle of my turn in box"...to which he/she replied..."I know...I wanted to see how the pros do it". Luckily for me my wife walked in just then and overheard the exchange...she promptly escorted them out of our site...:tsk: I guess I should be flattered to be considered a pro...:becky:

It seems that too many well-meaning folks come to visit me at all the wrong times, also. Maybe a "do not disturb" sign would work for those high-stress times?

I think it was pretty ignorant on your part. A fellow cook just making small talk tries to be friendly and probably could have helped you with your box and you blow him off like he's some spectator. I mean is it his fault your running late and are only slicing your meat with 2 min on the clock. Maybe if you where cool about it he could have given you a hand.

we always get walkers in. We deal with it in multiple ways. crank out obnoxious tunes during turn ins.... that usually keeps em out. we also situate the table that we do our turn ins at the back end of our enclosed tent. they would have to walk through 3 or 4 people just to get close enough to see whats goin on.

Before I started reading this forum, I had no idea of the intensity of competition BBQ or the structure of events... Turn in times, the importance of box preparation, etc. Organizers and the media invite people to "come on down" First time I strolled through a competition, I was expecting food for sale or maybe samples (Like BGE's "Eggfests") While I never would have considered walking into someone's area, I could easily have made a nuisance of myself by asking questions if I had been there near turn in times. Perhaps organizers could help by posting polite "Don't bug the cooks between -- and --"

dont worry some organizers do a really awful job of explaining what the expectations are to the public.

Unfortunately some cooks get too wrapped up into the comp side and forget to have fun, but most are friendly and don't bite.

Unfortunately those who do, do and those that don't like to pretend they do. Absolutely comps are about having fun, otherwise those who do compete would not do it. but, at the moment of turn in, all focus should be on the box and that should be respected. I take it from your posts you are a judge and have not gone through the sleepless nights and endless work it takes to get to the moment of turn-in. Otherwise I think you would have a little empathy for the need not to be interrupted during boxing. If I'm wrong feel free to correct me.

I can't tell if your serious or just trying to stir the pot. Your welcome to your opinion but if you really think it's okay to do what you say.....all I can say is WOW! If you are an actual competitor (which I doubt) and your reason for competing is just to party, consider this - between entry fees, meat cost, supplies cost, travel expenses, time off work etc. I easily have a $1000 invested in a contest. I'm there to have a good time but if the intent was to party hard, I'd stay home and invite the friends over for a hell of a party at $1000. I won't come in your site at a contest and ruin your party so don't come into mine and ruin my cook.

I talk to people all the time while I am boxing, its not a big deal to me. I understand that some people what their privacy and concentration. You should respect that of other teams though. I think he was a friendly uneducated competitor thats all, I am sure there was no harm intended.

Of course it's not problem for you. You spend the night before turn-in in Atlantic City, show up 5 minutes before turn in and win the damn event. Envious? Yes, yes I am.:grin:
