Finally got around to putting a hitch on my Dual UDS Cart this week...finished it up today by putting lights on it.
I stripped the cart down, welded the receiver on and had it sand blasted and painted. The hitch is removable from the cart...so I don't trip over the damn thing...so are the lights... Both have quick release pins so going from travel mode to smokin' is a snap.

That is an awesome cart! I was planning on doing something very similar, but in wood (mostly because I can't fab metal). I never even thought of putting a hitch on it to tow it like that. Great idea!
 
Any chance of posting some basic plans or dims? I am sure there are plenty of people here that are interested in mimicing your cart. Also, how do you get it on your hitch? It seems the might be a height difference.

Edit: Nevermind, I see what the wire is for.

I initially designed it off of my Weber Performer cart...tweeking it here and there to my liking. As far as dims, I made it a little wider than the Performer cart, since the stiffner rings on barrels make it wider. Also made it longer, obviously, to accommodate the 2nd barrel.
I do wish I would have made the work area a little wider. The barrels only sitting on half of the cart's framework works great. The chains hold them in place.

Getting it on the hitch...I do have to take the barrels off, but it only takes a couple of minutes to completely load it up or unload it by myself...but its much easier with 2 people.
For those wondering...the wire is for the ground on the lights.
 
looks like it was rainin pretty dang hard. thats a cool lil cart there. How much bounce do you get?
 
Very cool! A great solution to transport smokers.

Really not much bounce. But it does raise my headlights enough to piss on-coming drivers off :roll:.

Thanks for all the comments guys...going to use it the next couple of weekends. This weekend I'm gonna haul it about 120 miles to do a party for my bro-in-law...3 briskets and 2 butts, 10 lbs of fatties and 200 MOINKS.

Then the following weekend, we're hauling it 200 miles to a contest in Hays, KS :thumb:

:clap2::clap2:Great looking set, and a very doable idea for most, even if you have to work off the basic extra gear hitch carrier. Don't seem to have a photo of mine. I welded two of them together. So it would fit the mower deck, and all the other power equipment I have as the single carrier is 22" between the rails and most everything I own is 23 ½"wide:doh:

The only danger with wood would be that it will crack and break apart at the worst time( like at 70mph on the freeway with cars tailgating behind you.:shocked:

The draw bar I used is 3/8" thick tubing and I did full penetration welds on all the welds so it is built like a brick chit house. I don't plan on putting too much additional weight in the drums...maybe a bag of charcoal in each drum, but that would be all. I don't think cracking/breaking apart will be an issue... I did a 240 lb stress test on it by climbing on it and bouncing up and down and it passed that with no problem :wink:
 
That would get mistaken for a mobile meth lab around here for sure...:p

Great idea and nice job on the build!
