Which side are you on?

In honor of the season of Lent, and those souls who sacrifice their wanton meaty desires for the flesh, and in honor of those brave and foolish souls who choose to eat meat anyway, I am calling a SPECIAL Good vs. Evil - Go To Hell 2012 Throwdown!

For a little background on this, please visit this thread.

You can only submit dishes that are cooked on meatless Fridays (or Ash Wednesday), when willkat98 says you are not supposed to eat meat. You can either cook for Team Heaven by making a dish within the guidelines he set forth in the opening post of the "Go To Hell" thread, or you can cook for Team Hell and make whatever the fark you want and enjoy it!

You can also submit multiple entries, since people eat multiple meals in the day, and since there are multiple meatless Fridays during Lent. This is retroactive for any meatless day during Lent 2012, so any dishes you prepared on Ash Wednesday, or today will also be accepted.

Other than these two special dispensations, all other standard Throwdown rules apply.

This Throwdown will end when Easter passes. So have your photos submitted by Midnight Central time on Easter Sunday night 4/8.

By submitting entry photos to this Throwdown thread you are agreeing that you have read and understand the Throwdown Rules.

The voting will begin Monday 4/9 after the "Vote" thread is submitted and will run through Sunday 4/15. All votes will be public.

Best of luck and even better eats to all!

Well, I might as well submit this one...

Last night we had an excellent meal of Spaghetti and Meatballs with a made from scratch Spaghetti Sauce (well, I used canned whole peeled tomatoes in the sauce). I grilled the meatballs on the kettle. We all ate until we were stuffed, but there were leftovers.

So, when packing up the leftovers last night, I knew I had a great lunch in store for the next day. Then, when I log in today, I find out that if I eat my leftovers, I will go to hell again.

That's when I realized the genius of the Parrothead approach. His intent was to eat more meat, in order to compensate for all of those who were not partaking in the wonder of meat. Parrothead was most wise indeed.

So, in order to help bring balance to the universe, I made my lunch, replete with meat. I dedicate this one to all of you who are eating salads or McFish sandwiches right now.

I started with some bread...

...and smeared on some leftover Garlic Butter from last nights Garlic Bread (I mentioned the Garlic Bread didn't I?). This is a blend of real Butter, EVOO, fresh Garlic and seasonings.

Then I sprinkled on some Parmesan Cheese...

...and popped that in the broiler for a bit...

I then took the leftover meatballs and put them on one of the slices of bread. These were made last night using a blend of fresh ground Chuck, Sirloin and Boston Butt for the meat, and mixed with some Parmesan, Garlic, Italian Seasoning, Salt, Pepper and a dash of Sugar just to give it a little sumtin-sumtin. Then I grilled them on my kettle using indirect heat using Hardwood Lump and a chunk of Pecan wood.

Then I put on my homemade sauce. I made the sauce from scratch, because I know some people can get pretty bent out of shape if you use sauce from a jar on sandwiches made using leftovers. This was a simple sauce made by sauteeing Onion and Garlic in some Olive Oil, then adding in whole, peeled Tomatoes, Salt, a little Sugar, and stewed for a while, then adding in some Basil.

I topped it all with a couple slices of Provolone...

...and popped that back in the broiler to melt the Provolone.

All I know is, this sandwich was worth it!:thumb:

Happy Meatless Friday everyone!:becky:

I can't remember the last time an entry was posted on page one!

Not only that, but the first entry was posted just 26 minutes after the official TD announcement and by the same individual who made said announcement. This surely must be a first in the TD forum.

Could there be a darker agenda behind all of this? I guess we'll all find out in the end.

Chris, traditionally, all days during Lent were fasting and meatless. This is still the case for Eastern Orthodox. Currently, only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are observed as strict fasting days. Other Fridays are considered meatless Fridays. When you mention "fasting days" above, I don't think you mean that we are restricted to meals made on Ash Wednesday (now passed) or Good Friday -- that would seem a bit restrictive. Many people still adhere to the fasting/meatless rituals during this entire time -- it is a time of sacrifice afterall. You mention Roman Catholic so technically our meal must be cooked on Good Friday (or last Wednesday). Good Friday is April 6 this year. If you are going by Eastern Orthodox, Easter falls on April 15 this year and Good Friday is April 13. How about just opening this up to the entire time? I mean if you're going to be devout, you should really fast and go meatless during all of Lent, not just on Fridays.

Man, this stuff is complicated. I dated a girl in HS that gave up pot for lent, didn't understand it but I thought that was great, more for ...never mind.

I was wondering how long someone would come along trying to mess it up.:becky:

In order to keep this thing in line, and in spirit with the "Go to Hell" threads that this was inspired from, we will use willkat98 to guide us. This TD will accept entries on the days that willkat98 warns us to abstain from meat.

OK, wilkat98 goes with the meatless Fridays. Just to get a little clarification. Above you mention the entry must be cooked on fast days (actually meatless Fridays), and here you say "accepted," presumably meaning "submitted." Can we choose which one?

OK, I updated the text. Hopefully that will alleviate all of the confusion.

I thought all this religion stuff was supposed to be straightforward.

That's a fantastic looking veggie meatball sandwich! :becky:

Seriously, though, I bet it tasted even better than it looks. Great job, Chris! :thumb:

Well, I was really hoping for the "submitted" option rather than the "cooked" option, so it looks like I'm out. Had a great entry idea too.
