So, I was feeling sorry for myself all day.... and posting on the boards here, because the wife went to visit her brother for the weekend. I have a ton of school work (I am going back to college to finish my degree), and I have some work to do as well. That is why I couldn't go.

Anyway, I got to thinking about all the delicious food I was reading about and decided to raid the garage to see what we had.

1 ugly old charcoal grill = CHECK
1 partially full back of charcoal = CHECK
1 Bottle of lighter fluid = CHECK
1 half back of Jack Daniels wood chips = CHECK
1 lighter = CHECK

as you can tell...... so far so good. Now for the kitchen

1 bag of frozen chickens (cheap ones from the local grocery...gotta love the wife) = CHECK
1 packet of hot dogs = CHECK
1 bottle of seaseme ginger marinade = CHECK
1 block of mont. jack cheese = CHECK
1 bag of hot dog buns = CHECK
1 container of ginger (to sprinkle on top) = CHECK

Ok, now it is looking like a party.......

1 "throw caution to the wind and try this out" = CHECK

The picture isn't good (camera phone) and the food tasted much better than it looks, but it was mine and I thought I did pretty well for a rookie. Add a nice bonfire, a 6'er of Miller Chill, my dog, and some fireworks = VERY NICE

Lighter Fluid ???? :eek::eek::eek:

Other than that, sounds like it was a success and a lot of fun for you. That's the best part.

Now, scratch the lighter fluid and pick up a charcoal chimney to get those coals hot next time.

Nice job taking what you had around the house and turning it into something. It looks tasty.

Education Point:

Brethren Rule!
Never, ever do we use lighter fluid...

HOLY SMOKES!!!!!

I had no idea I wasn't supposed to use lighter fluid. CRAP!

I didn't use a lot, I promise.

Lighter fluid? What's lighter fluid?

Alright....easy on the new guy folks. It was an honest mistake..... I didn't see any "rules" section. Is this posted somewhere, I would hate to make another make such as this!

How about some ideas other than lighter fluid? What the crap is a charcoal chimney for starters?

Don't sweat it !!! We've all done it.

Charcoal chimney is a cylinder with a handle and a small grate on the inside.. Coals sit on the grate and you use crumbled paper that gets lit. Coals turn grey, then you dump in the kettle or firebox on a smoker etc.

Weber sells cheap ones. about $ 15 or so. Online or potentially at local BBQ supply places that carry other weber products.

Amazon or you other favorite online BBQ supply place or a local one in your area that carries Weber. Other no name brands are out there too.

I have SO much to learn..... I do not even have a favorite online BBQ supply place, and I don't know of any local ones.

I think I will try Home Depot.... I need to go there anyway

BUt my homework is to find these other places as well

google is your friend!

Youtube was better..... it showed me exactly what to di! haha

Bengal, other than the lighter fluid it sounds like you have the enthusiasm to become a master pitmaster of Groveport, OH. Keep active on this forum and you will learn a lot and then we can learn from your sucess. Cool deal bro!

***In best Homer voice with fist waiving in the air*** ........."Darn lighter fluid"

yeah, I was wicked proud of myself. The last time I tried chicken on the grill was about 10 years ago. The outside looked perfect, but the inside was SUPER PINK!

I learned a great deal from all the "smoking" talk and knew i had to smoke her for a bit....then got some flamage going to help speed things along because I didn't have a lot of time (I was hingry), and I wasn't exactly sure how long it would take to cook with just the smoke. Then i let the flame go out and smoked a bit more. There is prob. a much better way, but for me.... I thought it was delicious and I was VERY proud of myself! haha

I can't wait until my buddy "Stay Down" comes to help me with my UDS build! Woot Woot

Thanks for the kind words

hey tiger, get a Weber chimney. There are others out there and they may cost less but they are not just cheaper in price, they don't last very long. Weber is a good one.

I like to use one of those strike-a-fire sticks and break it up and strategically place the pieces around the pile of coals.

I picked one up from Home Depot today.. :)

Nice grindage The Bengal Thing!!!
