Help me spend my husband's $$

Not really though
Generally if there is something in the large size gift range I can get it out of him for Christmas. I'm a fairly good mom and wife so if I wanted I could just go and buy it without any flack from hubby. But I think he enjoys the gift giving more. This brings me to the point of this thread.
Say I had $300-600 to spend on something...one thing...what would it be?
And remember it's for a novice like me.
I made a broad range because I’d like to hear both the low end and high end of that spectrum.
Thanks!

Can you narrow it down a bit? Are you thinking about a grill, smoker, iPod? :-D

A Big Green Egg would be a great choice. Yes, a new one would be outside of your price range, but if you are patient and check Craig's List regularly, you can find on in hat range. Or, a WSM. You can get a 22.5" WSM for under $400 including shipping if you watch Amazon for special deals.

i say a 22.5 wsm .....some fuel....thermapen....injector....and the four comp meats....

I think I'd like something that I could do both on.
Is it bad that I'm sort of scuurrrred of the BGE???
I hear ya'll talk about his and that and ceramic grate breaking, seals sticking...etc I've seen the awesome things you guys do with them but don't know if I can take the heartache that seems to follow sometimes....But I also never say never....Suppose I'd just have to delve into the archives on here for a bit and read up right?

Don't be frightened. Just keep repeating "It's only a smoker/grill, it's only a smoker/grill" :-D

With any product people tend to talk about the issues, especially on a forum like this where there are so many experienced users who can help. Many many many more Eggheads cook successfully daily without a single issue. I have three Eggs and haven't had any issues. They are a great tool and are so versatile since you can grill, smoke, bake, cold smoke, etc. I think Rick said it best when he said that the Egg "costs more than it should but is worth more than it costs" or something close to that (Sorry if I butchered it, Bro!).

Have him get ya a Traeger. Pellet grills/smokers are very convenient and easy to use/figure out.

I also vouch for a small Big Green Egg. Lifetime warrantee and an amazing customer service group. Any problems you might have are ALWAYS dealt with promptly. I have two eggs and could not be more happy with my choices.
They might be more expensive than you are looking at.....but think of it this way.....you NEVER have to buy another cooker again. Well unless you kick it over or a tree falls on it.....which you would have to with any other cooker/smoker.

I was buying higher end gassers before I saw the light about 3 years ago and got my first egg. I was spending $1200- $1500 every 7-10 years on a new grill. I am now 38......so do the math on the SAVINGS I will experience plus the awesome food. Can you tell I am passionate about the egg.......most owners are....and for a reason.

I think that would really have to depend on what you have on your arsenal.... Judging by your footer, I can't think of a better investment than a new Weber Smoky Mountain - either the traditional 18" or the 22.5", depending on how much you cook at one time. I'd probably lean more towards the 22.5 for flexibility, but you can't go wrong with either. The foundation of everything you do is your pit, and thats what you should focus on first. The WSM is my go-to recommendation for an entry-level professional pit. I get beat by them regularly on the competition circuit, so that should tell you something about how good they are (or how bad I am )

Good luck!

In that range I'd go with a 22.5 WSM, thermapen, a couple of good cookbooks, some charcoal, smokewoods, and some meat! :p Unless you can get a BGE on craig's list or at an eggfest it'll run you around 800.00 for a large. Have fun!

WSM and thermapen has my vote. But of course get the Orange therma. A nice variety of some qualtity rubs would be great to go w/ it too.

I would love to have a BGE, I do not see those issues you are referencing as such a big deal considering how many use them here. Staying within range, the 22-1/2" WSM would be the thing.

WSM or BGE/Primo as everyone says or:

a UDS for about $50/75 and a Guru for $250. And then a gift card to Cabelas.

$50 for a UDS, you can build it together and bond over BBQ. This leaves $250 - $550 for MEAT! Print out the coupon for the Kingsford and get a pallet of charcoal too.

Thanks ya'll...side note...This is spending his money on me :) for Christmas (I start early)
Cabelas may be some ladies dream store but not this gal..ha ha ha

However I am thinkinking of sweet talking on the BGE and if it doesn't happen go with the WSM...can't lose either way right????

it's what my wife would do.

Just a suggestion here but how about a weekend in Vegas for you and me?:icon_blush: Hmmm, didn't think so... So my next best is the 22.5 WSM, I love mine!
