Made a couple of butts for a competition this past weekend. I did not place, yet I thought it was one of the best I had ever seen nor tasted. Not sure whether to pull it, chunk it or slice it. It was a backyard comp. Frustrating.

In TN i'd pull it and turn in 7 money muscle slices with the pulled.

Backyard comps are "all bets are off" type of thing. Seriously. Were there standards of judging? Were judges trained on how to judge against those standards? If not (and most dont), then you were left with just one persons opinion of what is great vs. anothers... I've seen backyard contests judged by people who hate smoke and prefer crock-pot BBQ (I almost couldn't even type that). Others think it's a sauce contest. Every once in a while you'll get a person who actually likes BBQ (even though they'll all say they do). Sit all of these folks at on table and you're sure to displease someone...

I wouldn't read anything at all into results from a backyard competition.
