I do more grilling than smoking. My experience is that pretty much all briquettes sold do an acceptable job of grilling and a base of coals fo smok'n. Some burn hotter, some light faster, some slower, some make yellow ash some gray, some smoke like railroad ties some like a dry twig. However, once they are ashed over they've all been fine to grill with.
I always have multiple makes and models of lump, briquettes and pellets. I enjoy the difference some subtle some huge.
For me and fuel, that's where the fun is.
