I am just starting to design a deck, to be adjacent to my house, which I plan to devote mostly to grilling and smoking. Since I am in western NY State, and the weather isn't good for 8 months of the year, I am thinking about putting a roof over it.
Roughly, the deck will be 13' 6" by 10', with the long side running parallel to the house. Opposite the house, on the "open" side and along the railing is where I would like to place the cookers. I want to put them about 1 foot away from the railing, and underneath the grills, etc., I am planning a row ( maybe 2 rows ) of 24"x24"x2" patio blocks. As they get stained, cracked, etc., I will be able to lift them out and replace them.
So, on to the roof.... I am thinking about having the roof extend a foot, or so, beyond the open side railing, so the grills/smokers will be "about" 2 feet toward the center of the deck from the edge of the roof. I want to pitch the roof so it is higher at that edge, than at the edge closer to the house, to allow the smoke to drift up, and out, when it hits the roof. I will run the trusses so that there is space at the outside ( higher ) edge of the roof, and the smoke can easily escape. The goal is to give me some "out of the rain" space to work when cooking, but not to trap the smoke.
So, has anyone ever fabricated something like this, and if so, what suggestions can you make? If anyone wants more details on how my plans are, so far, I can provide more detail, but wanted to get this posted, before it became too lengthy for everyone to read.
