I would go with a straight but heavy SPOG (no slather). If you really want to use a slather and rub, just treat it like a brisket (mustard and whatever beef rub you like).
 
I agree with "sliding billy" Salt, Pepper, Onion, and Garlic is a good basic rub.

Rub with a lite coat of Olive oil fresh 1 clove of chopped garlic and some thyme or rosemary let it sit over night in plastic wrap hit it with the SPOG right before going to the pit.
