Never noticed anything. Been doing it for years.

Using a propane torch (the bigger the flame the better) is simply good style points to light the charcoal. If I could use a flame thrower I might give it a whirl.

Cleaning the cook chamber on a pellet pooper doesn't do anything for the taste of the food IMHO, but, it could save you from some nasty side effects.

I use a variety of propane torches, just had to get this one on a kickstarter:

I've got one of those lawn/garden jobs that use the 1 lb bottles.

Works like a champ, and very portable.

Highly recommended.

No effect on the flavor and it's just fun to throw flames.

And the noise, which is like a jet taking off, always gets your neighbor's attention.

Can anyone post links and pics of the ones they have ?

I always recommend a long barrel torch, this keeps you out of harms way... and a long hose, which keeps you away from the bottle.

I also use a MAPP gas plumbers torch for my small cookers.

Walmart, Home Depot, etc. Works great.

Another Benzomatic MAPP torch guy here. But for just lighting charcoal get the propane bottles, a lot cheaper than MAPP. Use the MAPP for sweating copper.
