Pointers on using a temp probe

Hey guys , any tips or should dos on using a digital temp probe to read cooking grate temps. I've seen some wrapped in foil I think? Thanks!

Push it through a small potato sit it on the grate make sure it is at least 1-2" away from the meat so you get an accurate reading
