so tell us about your setup and charcoal size...
did you get it really hot and then choke down the bottom and top dampers?
lots of small pieces of lump?

A mix of lump sizes. I think is was just the cross wind sort of forced the flames/heat through the front gap of the plate setter. I think it was more heat than flames.
