Joined this group recently while I was in the process of building a UDS. I had an old olive oil drum that I picked up 8 years ago with plans to build a smoker but for whatever reason it just sat out in the elements until I got around to it this year. That made the cleanup a bit harder but, oh well. Here are some shots of the progress to the first batch of ribs.

This was a sealed drum and fortunately not lined. I used a piece of 1/8" x 1 1/4" flat stock to make a ring to hold a Weber lid on top. Three 3/4" pipe nipple intakes, two with risers and ball valves. Racks at 2", 9" and 17" down from top. Ports for 12" turkey fryer thermometers 1" below top two racks.

First charcoal basket (that did the ribs) and a larger build. The pot strainer works but does not let any ash fall through. Chokes off at about 6 hours. The new basket was made from expanded metal from Home Depot (12"x24"X1/2"). I used a couple pieces of 3/4" pipe clamped about 1" apart in parallel in my bench vice to facilitate bending the expanded metal sheet. Bending every inch or so made quick work of forming the round basket.

Thy were pretty rusty when I got them (at a garage sale?). Patented in the 1930s. Made in the USA!

good work on the drum and ribs!

I'll give you $150.00 for those clamps. I have a set of the larger clamps, would love to fill out my set.

Welcome to the Brethren! That is one great build you did there and will give you a lot of great cooks. Those Ribs look fantastic! Looking forward to your future cooks.

Nice work. How hard was it to weld that 1/8" steel ring around the top? Was it a constant weld around the whole barrel? Or just tacked on in a few places? Does it help with sealing the airflow or just keep your lid from falling off?

Beautiful Drum! Should provide a lot of great cooks off of it.
Ribs look down right amazing!

Thanks for sharing!
