Just noticed (on flicker), but you also preserved/created a way to cook by direct heat. I've contemplated this sort of thing and now have a guide.

Yeah, I had been contemplating building a fire pit next to it for direct heat cooking and it worked out the metal grating was the length of the entire pit so it was too easy not to do. I may modify it later and make it removable with some angle iron.

Well those ribs and pork butt were a knockout at the gathering this weekend! Pretty surprised by how much everyone liked it.

YES, I love this kind of stuff! I´ve got a backyard with cookers but I would love to build a pit like this. Great results!
