Used the MEATER last weekend at another KCBS competition in the Netherlands, again on the Boston Butt.
I was able to 'solve' the ambient temperature reading by not inserting the probe too far into the meat. At the first competition I didn't want to take any risk and inserted it into the meat way beyond the safety marking on the probe, close up to (but not touching) the ceramic end.
This time I only inserted it just about 5mm beyond the safety marking and the ambient reading picked up much quicker and displayed the right pit temperature in about 5 minutes.
So far the MEATER has been spot on and with the ambient reading now working as expected, I intend to use this as my preferred probe at the KCBS competitions for the Boston Butt.
