xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Black's - Another Lockhart BBQ. Damn. In Lockhart, BBQ joints are like Starbucks in NYC - there's one on every corner.

You sure you aren't thinking about Cooper's in Llano? Kreuz didn't move to their new building until '99, and that's when Smitty's opened up in the same building. I know Cooper's burns their mesquite and cooks over the coals and that's a lot closer to Kingsland.

How did you like the sauce at Kreuz's?
Saw a special on Smittys/Kreuz last year. Kreuz was where Smitty's is now and there was some family problems. If I remember right, one part of the family actually had the rights to the restaurant and the other owned the building. Anyway, the guys running the restaurant left, built a new building and the building owners went into the bbq business.

The boys, Rick and Don (IIRC) had the business, their sister had the building. they couldn't come to terms so the brothers took the business down the road. It lost a little something; mostly in consistency and the feel of the old building. When they moved, one bucket of coals from the old pits were carried down HWY 183 with police escort to the new pit.

The pits are out in the open, you walk up to them an order. They're basically low concrete block tubs about 42" high, with a cooking grate about 18" down into it. They're covered with metal doors that open to reveal the food. There's a log burning fire sitting out on the floor on one end. Ii almost walked into it at Smitty's.
I have no idea how ventilation is provided. I think the whole room must have it's own chimney. The pits are kept in seperate rooms from the rest of the restaurant. The rooms are dark and smokey. It's a real religious experience going into them.
