Guru's, Aubers, Stokers, PitmasterIQ are all PIDS and do a decent job. Sensor goes at the grate level and the controller unit tells a fan when to stoke the fire to keep that temp you preset.

For simplicity and cost i prefer the IQ ... fan is connected to the controller (all in one unit) and a hose runs to the pit. I built a rain box for mine to protect from wind rain and snow.
 
I competed in my first comp last weekend with my UDS and brinkmann trailmaster mod. Over 30 teams I finished 4th in brisket and 9th in butt, 2nd overall. Love this stuff. Proud to be one of the brethren!!!
