Since this topic is coming up a lot lately have a question.

I know an insulated firebox helps retaining heat and uses less fuel.

But knowing heat rises, if you can insulate the TOP of your firebox with insulation and a top plate, or fire brick, how much are you missing by not having the sides insulated?

I think many of us would probably just get a pit with an insulated firebox, but if that is the only thing we don't like about our pit can insulating the top be a realistic option?
