A great time was had by all last year... so this fall we’re going to do it again!

We are once more seeking certified rib judges, volunteer helpers, sponsors... and cooks who want to put their grilling skills to the test in the 5th Annual Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ Competition.

Categories are Ribs, Best Dish and People's Choice BBQ Sauce. Best dish can be anything at all from grilled bacon wrapped stuffed hot dogs... to grilled pineapple cakes... to soft tacos with red snapper and tomatillo-avocado salsa. Best dish is all about your best dish on the grill.

This tasty experience is for ALL teams, regardless of experience. This is a non-sanctioned contest.

As been the case since 2009, this community event is a great launch pad for “local” and “new teams” to cook in a fantastic learning environment for honing experience and skills. It’s also a great place for “seasoned” teams to try out new recipes and techniques.

The event will be held in the Glenwood Ave. parking lot - Downtown Glen Ellyn [MAP] on September 14, 2013.

Entries in the Ribs and Best Dish categories must be able to accommodate six judges. Best BBQ Sauce must be homemade and will be people's choice. Prizes will be determined by the number of competitors; there is a small entry fee.

Teams should bring uncooked and unseasoned pork ribs (spares or baby backs), and/or uncooked and unseasoned ingredients for Best Dish. All dishes must be cooked on site (with exception of people's choice bbq sauce) and the protein portion of each dish must start raw. Contestants must provide their own equipment; charcoal and gas grills/smokers are welcome, electric grills/smokers and open pits are not.

A 9x9 Styrofoam “Clamshell” will be provided for each category. Garnish for Ribs is optional, but if used is limited Green Leaf Lettuce and or Green Parsley only.

Teams may arrive as early as 8:00 AM and begin cooking once their coolers have been inspected.

Judging for best dish will be at 2:30pm and judging for best pork ribs will be at 4:30pm (these times may be subject to change). There will be a 5 minute window on either side of turn in times (See Rules found in application for further details).

This is a great 1-day contest that is well put together for a great cause. As long as nothing personal comes up, I wouldn't miss this one. The music, the food, the involvement of the community...it's a relaxing, fun cook-off. Thanks Tom.

I'd like to add that our People's Choice BBQ Sauce Category will be judged blind this year and is limited to the first 20 contestants on a first come basis.

We are also looking for vendors to sell Q to the public for the day. Last year, all four of our vendors completely sold out! :clap2:

I see water is not provided, is electricity? Can you enter the Bags tournament, and the rib cook off?

Hey MJL,

We do not supply water or electric. We also do not allow generators. That being said, if you have a Digi-Q or a Guru and can run it on a battery, you are more than welcome to use it.

So long as you can coordinate it, you can enter both bags and ribs. Our bags tourney is a real nice way for your friends and family who come to enjoy the day as well. We encourage that. :-D
