I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Wine & Swine (SIDE's bro and a trained chef) had something very similar to this at his non-bbq restaurant.

It definitely provides smoke flavor but on a much smaller scale.
 
So that's how all the Q places on the Island do it!!!!
I was always wondering why there was never any smoke in the air
