Not sure about the gauze, but isn't Ramadan about to end? I think I remember hearing something about a big traditional feast at the end of Ramadan with lamb on a spit to commemorate the end of the long fasting period. Anyway, if you have a large Muslim community in your area, this could explain the whole lamb.
