Basically the same as a 55 build, but bigger!
Custom built 18" dia charcoal basket 3" off the floor.

By imn88fan

Lid didn't have a bung and i HATE all those holes so i drilled a 2" hole and installed my patented PVC threaded adapter and a 8" piece pf 2" pipe for the exhaust!

By imn88fan

3 intakes, 1 with a 3/4" ball valve and the other 2 with simple magnets.

By imn88fan

Customized a lid holder from a 6" piece of flat bar.

By imn88fan

Added a hook for the grate...

By imn88fan

Stuck in a 12" turkey thermo to read at center right under grate.
Locked in at 250*

So far, acts no differently than the 55.
Was up to temp in 10 minutes with RO charcoal.
Using Mesquite to season the drum.

Nice looking drum.
What are you going to do with little brother?
what is the difference in diameter between the 55 and 85?

BTW, i gota thank my brother Chinese Bob for getting me an unlined drum!

I owe you one!

Nice! So did you have to build a custom grate to fit it?

No, found an old BBQ PRO 26" kettle in the garbage years ago, been saving it just for this project!
Grate fits perfect and the kettle lid will be retrofitted shortly!

Like the magnets! I use them for all three of my holes. Watch out on a hot wide open cook if you just stick them a little higher on the drum. They might melt to the side. Don't ask how i know that.

what did you do for the thermometer hole to keep the stem horizontal??
Nice drum you big drumhead.

Great advice, thanks Paul!

Nice drum you big drumhead.

I installed a small rubber bushing and theres also the original clip on the back.
Holds it right under the grate!

Nice looking drum. You will be able to fit a lot of Q on that drum!

Wait a minute Bubba. Just dawned on me. CAMO magnets too!:wink::biggrin:

about 30 gallons:lol:

I think SSBBQguy mentioned this but I now use this to keep the stem on my 12" thermometer nice and horizontal. No need to mess with the clip this way.
Stainless 3/8 x 1 bolt. Probably could have done without the outside washer, but . . . . . .

Can you tell us what type of bushing? No temp problems (melting) I was thinking about this, but was afraid when doing chicken it wouldn't hold up...
Can you post a picture of it?

TIA...
