What is your favorite local food or something your area specializes in that you may not be able to get anywhere?
The latest throwdown inspired me to really think about all the great things I can get locally here in Kansas City. It doesn't mean you can't get the same thing or at least something similar elsewhere, but it is stuff that produced within 30 miles of my house just north of Kansas City.
So without further ado, here you go...
Oak Ridge BBQ (and fellow Brethren KCMike) is located about 10 miles from me in Kearney, Missouri. The sauce is Galaxy and is made right here in Smithville, MO. It's still pretty new, but I really like it. We used it on our 3rd place pork at the Platte City contest in May.
The Apple brats are from Paradise Meats in Trimble, Mo. Several of you know about these guys and they ship Wagyu briskets across the country for comps. These brats are fantastic, though.
Kid 1 and 3 here. My two oldest used the apple brats in the Kids Q at Platte City and did pretty well.
And besides, what's a more important local produce than kids!
Now they think we always need to have them and they want to cook them when we do. So that's pretty cool.
The finished product. No, the chips aren't local. The tomato is from Arkansas (all the grocery had and my garden isn't ready yet). However, the milk is from Shatto Dairy in Osborne, Mo. I got to know this guy a few years ago when I wrote a story about him and it's a truly remarkable success story. Check them out. It's great milk, ice cream, cheese, cream, etc. And you'd never meet a nicer guy.
So, that's my list. What's yours?
