Who produces pork other than Smithfield?

Well said. From a previous life I'm well aware of large organizations (+900) with professional HR functions (I was the decision point for HR type investigations) and one thing I do know is professionals do not make decisions that impact peoples' lives on incomplete or innacurate information - least of all accusations (or pointed questions from a deposition) of lawyer (an advocate) or an alleged aggrieved party. Making decisions based on preconceived stereo types is unprofessional and absurd.
I'm not going to get into a debate here on whether your revenue and other assumptions are legitimate, but I will say I am annoyed with PC run amuck in this country. We ALL say things we shouldn't at times that do not define our entire character, but if it brings sensationalism to the press it will be grabbed ahold of and ridden into the ground.

I feel sorry for the multiple employees making a living based on her franchise that are now out of a job because of this being blown out of proportion.

Admittedly, I have limited information on the totality of the concerns, but based on what I've heard I have made my conclusions.

I have no idea what your last two sentences refer to.

Again, to be clear, the deal with China has not happened and can not happen until approved by Congress. So the crappy pork you are getting from Smithfield, is all Smithfield and has nothing to do with Chinese ownership.

That being said, I stopped buying Smithfield a while ago, because all I ever got was badly cut meat from the places that carried it out here. I go to Cash and Carry for all of my pork needs, and I believe it is largely IBP or Prairie Fresh. Sometimes it is unmarked, but, that is because they are breaking food service cases for smaller sales.

On edit: when I am cooking for myself or close friends and family, I buy local pastured pork, but, it is pricey. For anything else, I go with the above.

I may not know about pork from soy plants, but I do know that Congress doesn't need to approve the sale. The Committee on Foreign Investments in the US (CFIUS) needs to approve the sale. It is not a congressional committee - it is a government committee with membership from several bureaus with Treasury being the chair. I deal with these folks often since they need to approve the sale of interests in offshore oil companies to countries like China.

Did I redeem myself?

While I honestly agree with you in principle, I believe Bubba's propensity for watching porn at work within eyesight of employees is undisputed. What HR department would tolerate that. A better example of someone being ridden roughshod over would be Shirley Sherrod who was fired by the head of the department of agriculture without an investigation on the basis of a totally bogus, deceptively edited hatchet job of a video.

We get our pigs and shoulders from "Nahunta" here in central NC.

You should be able to find pork producers locally, just contact your state pork council (or national pork council if you can't find info on a state council).

The Chinese deal really does not bother me any more than US investments in "foreign companies". I quit using Smithfield because of the irregular sized cuts and butcher job (pun intended), for me I think the announcement of the Chinese deal was just a coincidence of timing while the quality of the produce was on my mind.
Again, to be clear, the deal with China has not happened and can not happen - - -

Fat Woody- Central Meats in Chesapeake is where I've been getting my prime briskets ($4.29lb) for comps. They are very good about letting me go "in the back" to select what I want. I will be talking to my contact there about their pork products.

Well, that was going to be too much for me to understand, so I made a crack about soy pork.
