I'm far from a top team and I foil. It's part of my process that lets us be consistent. I don't think I've cooked a good rack w/o foiling.
 
Zbucket, it probably has more to do with the type of cooker and the amount of smoke
they're using. Your set-it-and-forget-it types with auto-feeds aren't as smokey as
the average stick burner, so my guess is most (not all, but most) stick burner folks
use foil and probably less than half of the auto-pilot cookers would use it (my guess).
We're by NO means a top team, but we do use it.
 
Like Lake Dogs said - it depends on the cooker.

I foil ribs on my stickburner, but tried foiling ribs on my UDS and ruined a perfectly good rack
