After reading up for a couple weeks, started my UDS build last night, got two 55 gallon closed top drums from work for free, used to have flat 50 synthetic oil in them, so unlined luckily, yay! Grabbed two on the assumption that I would screw up cutting the lid off, or sacrifice the other barrel to use as a tall lid.
Took some pictures but can't upload them at the moment. Not a pretty cut, but angle grinder with a cut off wheel, steady hand and a couple beers worked like a charm! Can't remember who's post it was saying that would work, but bravo, saved me the $45 buying a whole weber grill off craigslist, great site, great people, hopefully post pictures soon and pictures of it with some meat on it very soon after!

New to forums, think I figured out the pictures right after of course.

Gonna have to look up this rotisserie bird barrel you speak of. Funny story, the "before"picture of the drum is actually just the other drum, I didn't think to take pictures till I was done.

^^^I was very confused because I remembered Bob-c-que being around a while! Didn't notice the difference until you posted Bob...c...I mean.

No progress for a day or two, hard to hide projects from the wife when you're with the wife.

I was very confused when I thought I saw a post from me about my familiar screen name, lol. I thought bob-a-cue was a good pun, since I'm a Bob. Are we going to wind up with a full alphabet of Bob's now? Because that might be too many.

Thats a good way to cut. Nice clean cuts, no jagged burn marks.
I've cut 1/4 in steel that way, I start the cut with a grinding wheel, then finish with the cut wheel.
Nice start on your drum!

Managed to finish up the UDS in time for my wife's birthday, huge hit, delicious first meal out of it too. Spatchcocked my first yardbird ever, ginger ale and italian dressing marinade with a store bought mesquite chipotle rub, best chicken I've had in years. Forgot some forked and salted sweet potatos on the smoker while it was warming up and the came out delicious. Surprise winner of the whole meal though, the corn on the cob cooked in the smoker for a couple hours, amazing. I won't be able to eat corn on the cob that wasn't smoked anymore. Managed to get a picture before the bird was devoured, my 14 month old daughter loved it!

Burning off the paint and cleaning the inside with the weed burner was a blast, loved the blued metal look afterwards, wish I had a clear coat high heat paint to save that look. I'll post more pictures next time we use it, my wife loves her new smoker, thank you to everyone for the advice on how to build it, and more importantly how to pretend I know how to use a smoker!
