I have been considering upgrading to one of those glow in the dark tel tru 4” or 5” thermometers on a Shirley horizontal cabinet model. Does anyone have a clue what size stem I can use. There are sizes on their thermometers ranging from 2.5” to 6”. I don’t what an issue where it’s too long and risk probing the meat when I close the doors or bend the stems if they hit the racks.
From experienced users of the Shirley cabinet models, what do I go with?

Paul will be building me a new cooker soon. I am using the 5" Glow in the Dark Tel Trus and Paul recommended that I go with a 2.5" stem........they are at his shop now.

That said, I have a Shirley 24x36 that I put a 3" Tel Tru on that has a 4" stem and I've never had a problem with that model. Don't think I would opt for the 6" though.

I have 5" dial with 4" stem. Sometimes the stem touches the meat and skews the reading, whether or not that would be an issue for you with that length stem probably depends on your cook chamber design and where you place the meat. In retrospect I'd probably go for 2.5", but I can generally adjust the piece of meat next to it a little bit to avoid it being an issue.

I just got a 4inch stem, but 5inch face. I had a 6 inch stem but the 4 reads better. The 6 went right under the top rack in my 24x36 and seemed like rack affected the reading.

Ok. So what I’m hearing is with regards to the stem, anything from 2.5” to 4” is a comfortable size which doesn’t impede on racks and food in the cooker. Makes sense and I appreciate everyone’s feedback. At this point, I do not know what thermometer comes standard on the Shirley, so these I will order and have at my home to upgrade on my own. If Shirley Fab provides the River Country, then I can use them for now or as a backup if I end up overheating the cooker and break the thermometers.

I know that Shirley now has Tel Trus with their own Logo, not the "Glow in the Dark" versions and may be limited to a 3" face that, I think, are an Option. No idea the stem length. I knew that I wanted the 5" versions, which they don't offer, and, with "Eyebrows" over them, so I ordered and had shipped to Paul.

This is the one I went with instead of the glow in the dark, which is what I wanted but I figured if I need a glow-in-the-dark thermometer, I probably got lights on when it’s dark out anyway so what do I need to go in the dark for and this one, save me about 40 bucks.
