I was away for a couple of months and I when returned I found that I had left one of the ball valves open. The resulting water on the bottom of UDS caused some rust.

Should I attempt to get rid of this with a wire disk or will the next cook result in a coating of ash and oil that will neutralize the rust?

Don't got a UDS but I'd just wire brush it good and go back to cookin, one rust event shouldn't hurt a full grown barrel!

if its surface rust, not the heavy flake stuff just cook on it. It will disappear fast :)

I would hit the rust area quickly with a wire brush then cook on. I wouldn't worry about getting back to shiny metal.

Just spray some Pam on it and keep the ashes out of it for any extended periods of time. I have a large pizza pan bolted to the bottom of my basket with 3 inch bolts as a stand off to help collect the ash. Works fine for about 95% of the ash.

Blessings,

Omar
