Iwas on the way home from work and saw a BBQ joint that I had never been to so I stopped. The name of the place is Benny's BBQ. It was right across the street from a firewood lot and I could smell smoke. Went in side and the had an old brick pit and only 3 tables (one of them wobbly). I was ready for a BBQ experience.
Psyche.
I ordered the lunch special which was a sandwich ( your choice of beef, pork, turkey, chicken, or pork hot links) and two sides. I chose a pork sandwich with collard green an coleslaw. I asked if the pork was pulled and the lady behind the counter and the cook looked at me like I was speaking another language. Not a good sign but I was trying not to be judgemental.
The service was fast and I had gotten my sandwich to go. Figured I'd eat on the way home. I took a bite of the sandwich and...hmmm...how can I describe it?
Nothing.
I got nothing.
This had to be the most bland pork sandwich I have ever had in my life. The meat was tender (probably because it was sliced so thin) and swimming in sauce. The sauce was neither sweet nor spicy nor vinegary. I think the best thing you could say about it was that it was wet. I wiped off a piece of the pork and saw no evidence of a smoke ring whatsoever. I think the tastiest part of the sandwich was the hamburger bun.
The greens had a good flavor and texture but I got more stems than leaves. Some of the stems were big enough to be broccoli.
The coleslaw was just cabbage mayo and vinegar. Nothing else.
It was a sad meal and you don't have to worry about me going there again.
