Aluminum should be fine. If you look in the center of this group shot you will find a Smokin joe smoker and the chamber is made from a aluminum tamale pot.

Try searching the site for mini-WSM, and you'll find a bunch of information on turning a Smokey Joe and a 32 quart tamale pot into a smoker.

My kids each got their own mini-WSM kit for Christmas and we'll build them as soon as the weather starts to turn.

Here is one I did for a friend! 30 gal. Smokin Joe.
 
Not @ all, used 3/8 cold roll. He cooks on a wood deck thats why I raised it so high! Most people here Northern Ca. hang their meat on hooks! I do both the grill & hooks!
