Phil, the version I've always heard is punched out of shark meat. I have no idea if its true or not. Don't really care, they're good eats anyway. I am curious though.

That was a problem (shark/ray/other accidental catch) a few years ago -- cheap imports were cheap for a reason.

Greg nailed it -- the sea scollops are deep water and bigger -- either one are good eats! Bay scallops are outstanding fixed scampi style.

I don't know which is which but I do know that some are punched out and passed off as scallops.
