Greetings,

I inadvertently bought Royal Oak lump instead of briquettes. I was a little worried, but the Brethren talked me off the ledge and suggested I would love lump!

So, the cook went well. I did two racks of ribs and the results were soundly praised. I cooked them foil-less for 3 hours 15 minutes at between 225F and 255F. The WSM went up to 305F toward the end of the cook with no obvious adverse side effects. I'll let you judge for yourself.

I wonder if I'll be a lump convert?

Thanks for looking; comments welcome.

I always keep both lump and briqs around - different tools, ya know.

Very nice!

I've been using RO lump in my WSM for a while, and I love the results. I may have to go back to briquettes on the Backwoods for a while. If it held as much as the WSM does, I'd probably stick with the lump. We'll see after I mod that charcoal tray. Lump is easier to find around here over quality briquettes.

nice ribs! I'm a recent convert myself!

I use briquettes to start my chimney and pour them on top of lump in my firebox. It just seems easier to start a chimney with briquettes.

I like to use lump for long cooks because I don't have to worry about my fire being chocked out with ash... but I'm a stick burner for the most part so I'm use to tending a fire every hour or so.

When do use lump vs. briquettes??

Little Dick

I primarily use lump, but for the UDS I've been using hardwood briqs like Rancher or Trader Joe's (same thing) for a more predictable burn. They also have low ash production & I'm too lazy to pack lump nicely in the basket. Sometimes I'll mix in some lump 'cause it seems to me the lump I've been using (B&B Oak) imparts a nice flavor.

For grilling it's lump all the way. In the mini WSM I also use lump so I can get the temps I need - I have a hard time getting it up to temp with briqs.
