Compositionally, think about getting down closer to eye level with the food. The overhead shot like this one can be a little boring. Look at the pics of my prime rib, which i didn't even really shoot to show off, it was more of quick reference shots. I got a lower angle looking head on to the subject.

If you shot this with a phone, you can usually tap the screen where the focus point is, to cut down on the blurriness.

Me? An Android cell phone. Wouldn't matter though, I bought a digital camera once that I took crappy pics with as well.. My kids of course made the ones they took with the same camera look like portraits...
