Do I need to cover wood while it seasons?

We had two red oak trees cut down on our property. Consequently I've got a ton of fire wood and bbq wood. I've got two questions.

1. How long does it normally take to season wood?

2. Should I cover it with a tarp or something?

Thanks in advance brethren.

I keep mine covered to keep it dry. That said, I always use gloves when I'm loading a cart full of wood and bugs don't last long in the firebox. :biggrin1:

You want to keep it up off the earth and also protect the top from rain in a manner that will allow air flow through the wood.

Split oak shoud take around 4-6 months to cure. Logs much more time.
