I'l get some of this wrong as well, regarding qaulifying for invitationals....but I'm on the road and the client has had something come up and I'm held over for a day!
For the Royal: 50 teams, turn in chicken, ribs, pork, brisket
15 teams first year w/state championship proclamation the same categories
25 teams every year thereafter w/proclamation and the same categories
That's good just about everywhere, but I'm certain there are exceptions that I'm not aware of...beyond winning a GC at a major invitational that has a reciprocal agreement.
That being said, the majority of Texas sanctioning bodies can send a qualifier with three categories (chicken, ribs, brisket) but must meet the standards for team count and/or proclamations. IBCA, LSBS, TGCBCA (they've got to shorten that
, and I believe Central Texas (can't remember the acronym) all send qualifiers to the American Royal, or have in the recent past.
I believe that the same standards apply to get into the Jack draw. I don't have a day and a half to type out the rules regarding the draw process, which does contribute to making draw day special for MANY!
So, to answer the original question....if the contest is from a recognized sanctioning organization or has been recognized by one of the major invitationals you have to win and the contest has to meet the standards above.
