Hello from small town Kansas. I've been appointed to put together a BBQ comp. Let me first say that I have never been to a real BBQ cookoff and therefore am completely in the dark. However, over the past week I have been reading several threads on this site and am beginning to see why you all are so passionate about this hobby. I have been reading the threads in Comp BBQ, and the ones that ask for input to their presentation boxes are a real eye opener. I would judge them all a 10, but after reading what you post, the things that pull the grade down, I am beginning to see the real art in these contest. We have pick out a date in July to hold this contest, if KCBS will sanction it, and we are planning to hold a judging class in April to generate some interest in this area for certified judges for the cookoff. As for me, I am a 60 year old retiree that has more time on his hands than money. Thus you now know why I was elected to put this cookoff together. I have been doing woodworking project for my whole life and I have been brewing beer as a hobby for about 30 years or so. I enjoy cooking for small groups and for pleasure I love a good homebrew and a fine BBQed steak in the evening with friends. I hope I can get some input from you pro's on the do's and don'ts of a KCBS cookoff. I feel that this is a very big undertaking and I really want it to come off good. I know that the first year is a learning process and it will need to be tweeked as we go along. From what I have gotten from KCBS I think they will be a great help for us to have a successful contest, but any help you all have would really be appreciated. Thank you
